Rules

  • The car advances and follows bends automatically. Move freely across the road. Avoid traffic and barriers. Road edges gently guide the car back onto the road, including when lanes end. Voyage changes scenery every kilometre; Highway and Coast keep their road type. Keep right: cars and trucks on the left travel in the opposite direction. Voyage also crosses long bridges with sparse traffic and no construction barriers. Boost pads give a short burst of speed; the ramp that follows lifts the car over a barrier, with a single lane left open to drive around it. Further on, a curl track in the right-hand lane rolls the car upside down, ten metres up; its gas jets turn it upright and it glides over the barrier beyond. Past 9 km the speed keeps climbing. A car carrier can be driven up from behind: its ramp is a jump. Many broken skyways turn into a corkscrew: the car rides upside down, lets go and lands on the road below, on a wide boost pad that fills the gauge.
  • A shield absorbs one collision. A magnet attracts pickups for 10 seconds. Energy cells come in short trails and add 15 Overdrive units; Overdrive uses 18 per second, and its extra speed grows over the first 5 kilometres, up to 32%. A rare nova overcharges the car, which goes straight into Hyper with Overdrive held full for 30 seconds. A prism is worth 500 points and often waits on the oncoming side. Score: 100 every 100 metres, 50 per energy cell, 150 per shield, magnet or nova and 50 per close pass.
  • Overdrive on: ×2 at once, ×3 after 4 s and ×4 after 10 s without letting go. It burns the gauge, except in the air. Keep it on for 2 s with the gauge above the white line (85%): Hyper ×5, and the gauge locks full for 3 s. Hyper lasts while the gauge stays above the line. Under it, Hyper stops: hold the gauge above the line for 2 s again. A hit or switching Overdrive off ends the chain.
  • Your best score and current run are saved on this device, separately for each mode.

Controls

  • Steer with ← →, or drag horizontally. Press Space or the Overdrive button to switch Overdrive on or off. It switches off when energy runs out. Esc: pause.

The game guide

A free driving game under a sun that never sets

Synthwave Highway puts you on an endless road lined with palm trees, pink and cyan neon and glass towers: the future as the 80s imagined it. Weave through traffic, collect energy and unleash Overdrive for as long as your reflexes hold. Cruise for a chill night drive or chase every point at full speed. The game runs in your browser, free, with nothing to install.

How to play Synthwave Highway

Your car drives forward on its own and follows every bend: you only steer. Slide across the lanes, avoid cars, trucks and roadworks, and pick up anything that glows. A head-on crash ends the run unless a shield takes the blow; a sideswipe only costs a little speed.

  1. Choose your road

Voyage changes scenery every kilometre, from the Palm Coast to Neon Downtown, the Copper Canyon and the Horizon Bridge. Coast stays on the palm-lined seaside road, and Highway widens and narrows between 4, 6 and 8 lanes as you go.

  2. Steer and keep right

Use the arrow keys, or drag sideways on a touchscreen. Traffic on the left is coming towards you. Boost pads give a burst of speed, and the ramp after them sends your car over a barrier.

  3. Light up Overdrive

Energy cells fill the gauge. Press Space or the Overdrive button to go faster and multiply your points: ×2 at once, then ×3 and ×4 as long as you hold it.

Tips for a longer, higher-scoring run

Read the road ahead

Signs warn when lanes end or open up, and roadworks close lanes with cones and barriers. Change lanes early: at Overdrive speed, a gap closes faster than you think.

Take your risks on the left

Prisms are worth 500 points and often wait on the oncoming side. Every close pass adds 50 more, so a quick visit to the left lane pays off, as long as you get back in time.

Keep Hyper alive

Hold Overdrive with the gauge above the white line (85%) for two seconds to trigger Hyper at ×5, from the very start. After three seconds locked full, it lasts as long as the gauge stays above the line; drop under it and you need two more seconds above it to restart. Chain energy trails, let a magnet pull in the cells around you, and catch a nova to refill everything at once.

Score and leaderboards

You earn 100 points every 100 metres, 50 per energy cell, 150 per shield, magnet or nova, 500 per prism and 50 per close pass. Overdrive multiplies every gain by 2 to 4, and Hyper by 5. Switching Overdrive off or losing your shield drops the multiplier.

Voyage, Coast and Highway each have their own leaderboard. Before accepting a score, the server replays your run from your inputs. Play freely without an account; sign in to Zlobby to post your best result.

Synthwave Highway: your questions answered

Is Synthwave Highway free?

Yes. It's a free car game that runs right in your browser, with nothing to download or install. You can play without signing up; a Zlobby account is only needed to appear on the leaderboards.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes, on phones and tablets as well as computers. On a touchscreen, drag to steer and tap the Overdrive button. On a keyboard, use the arrow keys and Space, and Esc to pause. Your current run is saved on the device.

What is synthwave?

Synthwave is electronic music inspired by 1980s film and video game soundtracks: analogue-style synthesizers, arpeggios and huge snare drums. Its retro-futuristic imagery (neon grids, palm trees, striped suns) is the world you drive through here. Darksynth is its darker, heavier side.

Where does the music come from?

The four tracks are original and synthesized live in your browser: no audio file is downloaded. The music follows your driving. The tempo builds with distance, the arrangement grows every 1,200 metres and Overdrive brings in its own melody. In the settings, pick one track or shuffle them all.

Do the cars drive differently?

No. Solvane and Inox differ only in looks: speed, handling and size are identical, which keeps the leaderboards fair. Pick yours on the start screen.
