Rules

  • Each numbered clue matches a word to write across or down. Crossing words share their letters.
  • Choose Easy, Medium or Hard. Every new grid is assembled from a large dictionary, and the clock never sets a time limit.
  • A correct word lights up and locks its letters. A full but wrong word shakes so you can fix it. Hint reveals one correct letter.

Controls

  • Type letters directly in the grid. Arrow keys move, Enter or Space switches direction, Tab jumps to the next clue and Backspace erases. On touch screens, the built-in keyboard opens on its own.
  • Starting a new grid replaces the current one after confirmation. A finished grid leads straight to the next one.

Free online crosswords

A classic numbered crossword, rebuilt for the screen. Read a clue, type the answer straight into the grid and watch each correct word light up. New grids in three levels, in 30 languages, on computer and mobile.

How to play

Each number in the grid starts one or two answers. Across words read from left to right, down words from top to bottom. Pick a cell or a clue, type your answer, and use the crossing letters to unlock the harder words.

  1. Pick a level

    Easy uses short, everyday words in a small grid. Medium adds more crossings. Hard offers a larger grid with longer and rarer words.

  2. Choose a clue

    Click a cell, or a clue in the list. The whole word is highlighted. Click the same cell again, or press Enter, to switch between across and down.

  3. Fill in the grid

    Type the letters: the cursor moves forward on its own. A correct word lights up and locks, a wrong full word shakes. The grid is done when every clue is solved.

Solving tips

Start with the easy words

Short answers and clues you know at once give you letters for free. Each solved word places letters in the crossing answers.

Let the crossings help

Stuck on a clue? Fill the words that cross it first. Two or three letters in place are often enough to see the answer.

Use hints sparingly

Hint reveals one correct letter in the current word. A grid finished without hints earns three stars.

Stars and progress

Each finished grid shows your time, the hints used and a rating from one to three stars. Three stars without hints, two with up to three hints.

Your current grid, letters and timer are saved automatically on this device, and in the cloud once you sign in. There is no public leaderboard.

Are these crosswords free?

Yes. Play in your browser on computer, tablet or phone, without an account and without installing anything.

How many grids can I play?

Each new grid is assembled from a dictionary of several thousand words, so you can keep playing. Recently used words are set aside to vary the grids.

How do I know if a word is right?

A correct word lights up and its letters lock, crossing cells included. If you fill a word completely and it is wrong, it shakes and stays editable.

How do I type accented letters?

Each language follows its own crossword conventions, shown in the help. The full spelling of every answer appears in the solutions at the end.

Can I finish a grid later?

Yes. Your grid is saved as you play. Come back to the game and choose Resume to continue where you left off.
